{"id":5108,"date":"2016-10-07T13:00:03","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T13:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arvengconsulting.com\/en\/?p=5108"},"modified":"2022-01-14T12:16:09","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T11:16:09","slug":"design-temperature-definition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arvengtraining.com\/en\/design-temperature-definition\/","title":{"rendered":"Design Temperature definition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>design temperature<\/strong>, along with the design pressure, fluid characterization and other technical-economical requirements, is a critical parameter in the <strong>design and material selection<\/strong> of process equipment, instrumentation and piping.<\/p>\n<p>The selection criteria differ slightly depending on the engineering practices, but generally consist of assigning a design margin to the <strong>maximum (and minimum) normal operating temperature<\/strong>, which is usually around 25 \u00baC, being that margin smaller at high and low temperatures in order to avoid an unnecessary selection of more expensive materials. The design temperature <strong>must also include any alternative working condition<\/strong> (start-up, shut-down, drying, \u2026).<\/p>\n<p>If there are <strong>heat exchangers<\/strong> in the system, a criterion has to be followed to reduce the design temperature accordingly to the normal operating in the process, and so to avoid extending more restrictive design conditions than required in the downstream system.
